Fellas, Ready to “Man Up?”

Black male with glasses and a neck tie smiles

Hello! My name is Rayshawn Ledet (He/Him) but you can call me Ray. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of New Jersey. I provide therapy services to teenagers and adults.

My Message to Men

Have you heard this before?

“As a man, we’re not allowed to show our emotions.”

How about this one?

“I’m considered weak If I need help.”

What about this?

“Man up!”

Let me remind you… you’re not “weak” for seeking therapy. You’re not “less than” for seeking therapy.

We're Human Too

You’re human.

Humans have emotions. By going to therapy, you’re doing the most vital, productive thing possible. You are addressing any issues or concerns you may have. You are learning how to control your response to emotions. You are improving your quality of life.

Everyone isn’t born into an ideal family where we’re taught how to manage our emotions in an effective manner.

In society, men learn to manage their emotions in a way that can be to their detriment. Such as bottling up how they feel. Without a healthy outlet, men suppress their emotions. This will influence our behavior/actions in an undesirable way.

Imagine shaking up a bottle of soda. The moment you twist it, you hear a “hissing” sound. If you continue to turn and remove the cap, the soda starts to shoot and pour out like a volcano! Now, there’s a “mess” to clean up.

The Mask We Wear

How many times did you have to wear a mask to hide or suppress how you felt in those moments? How often did you have to bottle things up when having a conversation with someone at work? Or with your partner? This is difficult without a healthy outlet to process those lingering emotions.

You’re a man! How do I know?

Men do things to improve their situation. The fact that you’re reading this shows that you’re taking the necessary steps. It shows you want to improve your situation and quality of life as a whole.

What are the steps to this “therapy thing?”

First, you will schedule a consultation with a therapist to see if you’re the right fit for each other. Most consultations are free! If you're a good fit, you can schedule your first appointment.

Before the first session, you will fill out intake forms.

From there, all you have to do is show up and you and your therapist will go from there.

The Past is the Past. Now Is The Right Time To Create a Better Tomorrow

Because you can do something alone doesn’t mean you have to. Especially when you have someone that wants to support you. After all, iron sharpens iron. We want to help you. You got this!
